The M-2 Motorway is a convenient and scenic drive of 360 kilometers between Lahore and Islamabad. There are rest stops en route at regular intervals offering all services. The best part of the drive is when you climb up from the plains of Punjab to the Pothohar Plateau through the historic Salt Range. The Salt Range is dotted with old forts, temples and other archaeological sites showing the passage of various Kings, conquerors, invaders and travelers through the region. The range is known for the Khewra Salt Mines, one of the biggest in the world. The discovery of the salt mines is attributed to Alexander’s Army. The troops found their horses licking the ground for salt.
